Outdoor living is by no means a new trend in Western Australia. Every day, more families are spending tens of thousands of dollars crafting their own luxurious spaces they can entertain in all year round; despite what the weather throws at them. Outdoor rooms are evolving – and it’s not just the at-home additions that are sparking attention.
As creatures of comfort, Australians crave spaces that cater for everything. And the live music and entertainment industry is no different. Venues that utilise outdoor rooms with state-of-the-art technology, integrated spaces and modern patio designs that are acclimatised for the Perth weather (in rain hail or shine) not only bring in more business but are definitely more appreciated by the locals. “For the most part, Perth weather is fantastic! But we all want to make the most of the outdoors at every opportunity; even if it is cold, wet and windy. Thanks to the continuous advances in materials and roofing options, local venue owners are able to invest in patios and smartly-designed outdoor areas to suit all requirements and budgets”, explains Brett Woods (Design Consultant Manager at Great Aussie Patios).
We check out the hottest outdoor entertainment venues in Perth that are designed to withstand almost all weather conditions. So get warm, brave the cold and get out there!
1. Universal’s Rooftop Terrace Bar
Nestled in the heart of Northbridge, Universal Bar – the house of jazz and blues – is packed with everything a good live music venue should offer. With live music running from Wednesday through to Sunday evenings, the bar showcases a solid mix of classic rock, funk, groove, RnB, soul, dance hits and more, Universal is renowned for their high calibre of musicians, ridiculously tasty cocktails and entertaining bar staff.
But it doesn’t stop there. Whilst the main bar is inside, the rooftop terrace is where they really outdo themselves. Voted the best redeveloped outdoor area when it was first built in 2008, Universal’s rooftop terrace bar features a large outdoor alfresco space with a retractable roof and state-of-the-art sound system. Crowned one of the best function venues in Perth; you can enjoy live music, a stunning view of the city and outdoor entertaining without getting your hair wet.
2. Northbridge Brewing Co.
A relatively new addition to Northbridge, the Brewing Co. is the land of beers, burgers, breakfast bites and more. Overlooking the green grass of the Northbridge Piazza this brewing baby brings a taste of the Swan Valley a little closer to the city; with a family friendly vibe that caters for people of all ages.
The venue boasts a massive indoor brewery-restaurant style section with an outdoor area perfectly acclimatised for the Perth winter. With an uncover outdoor bar space and large shade sails that shield against rain and the harsh rays of the Australian sun, the Northbridge Brewing Co. has all bases covered. Complete with party lights to set the vibe, designated umbrella seating for the ‘uncovered’ areas and outdoor heating for those cold, winter nights. The real favourite though is the city views from the outdoor space – which aren’t obstructed by the shade sails or umbrellas.
3. The Reveley
Elizabeth Quay’s is Perth’s newest development on the Swan River, bringing in oodles of trendy bars, cafes and restaurants. Located in the heart of the Quay promenade is The Reveley – a fresh new bar that focuses on creative cocktails, innovative food and an impressive wine list. Resembling a boat-like feel to it, The Reveley is made up of the ground floor, restaurant and rooftop bar known as ‘Henry’s’.
Henry’s Rooftop Bar is where it’s at. With some of the most spectacular views of the Swan River and Elizabeth Quay, the bar overlooks Perth’s latest outdoor space and showcases the jetty and ferry setup at its finest. With rooftop cover to shield from the winter rain or summer sun, the rooftop bar offers a fine blend of indoor/outdoor entertaining.
4. The Conservatory Rooftop Bar
Perth’s original rooftop bar at The Conservatory has a reputation for its panoramic city views, open-air garden and 14m retractable roof; crafting a well-designed space that encourages outdoor entertaining all year round. With an ambience that shows off a rustic-meets-urban charm, The Conservatory Rooftop Bar is deliciously versatile. The open air lawn space merges the outdoor world with an area that’s shielded from Perth’s weather conditions, complete with its exclusive BBQ zone.
The retractable patio roof and luxurious fit-out stage a multi-purpose space that is brilliantly accommodating for local socialites and tourists. Voted as one of the city’s best function areas, The Conservatory Rooftop Bar is a space that gives you the best of both worlds.
5. Skye Bar
As one of the Northbridge’s popular late-night venues, Skye Bar (the old Shed on Aberdeen street) combines contemporary with European influences to create multiple funky alfresco spaces within the one venue. These award-winning outdoor entertaining areas have seen Skye Bar reinvent itself from the dark and dingy days of The Shed to craft a venue that’s perfect for a few sundowner drinks in the afternoon or a rockin’ nightlife vibe at night with spacious open air stages and a great repertoire of bands.
The outdoor alfresco spaces alter between vibrant umbrella shades to shield patrons from the Perth winter, as well as cosy Spanish-styled nooks to offer that warm winter vibe. Tiki huts and shade sails make up the rest of the alfresco areas, with a seamless blend between the indoor/outdoor world.
6. Badlands Bar
On its way to becoming Perth’s hottest new live music venue, Badlands Bar (previously known as Devilles Pad) has had one hell of a facelift. And there’s still more exciting renovations to come! Swaggering its famous Las-Vegas inspired theme (just a little less hectic this time around), the old Devilles has seen a tremendous overhaul with a live music stage that’s doubled in size and state-of-the-art sound system to compensate.
Whilst the bulk of renovations has been completed, which punters got to see at the bars teaser night back in March, Badlands Bar still has more impressive makeovers to come. Officially opening its doors to the public in July, the outdoor entertaining, designated smoking and relaxing space will see automatic louvres be installed in the next 8 or so weeks. This will turn the area into a well-crafted outdoor/indoor room to be used all year round. Currently, the outdoor space is uncovered; but with a sneak-peak preview of the new design set to take place, Badlands Bar will be another great live music venue in the area specifically designed to be acclimatised for the Perth winter (and summer months too!)
