No strangers to Australian shores, New Zealand roots/soul/pop act Six60 are returning next year for a string of headline shows. Already announced to headline Raggamuffin Festival in Melbourne and Sydney, the band have added their own shows in Brisbane and Perth for one massive tour. It’ll be the boys first time back in Australia since their sold out tour in 2015.
Emerging in the summer of 2008 somewhere within the confines of Dunedin’s 660 Castle Street, five Otago University students began plotting a music extravaganza. Marlon Gerbes, Matiu Walters, Eli Paewai, Chris Mac and Ji Fraser picked up instruments, turned on amps, closed the door to keep the noise in, and Six60 came to life. In the years since, the band traversed tens of thousands of miles throughout Australasia, Europe and The USA, and transcended the loftiest of expectations placed upon them by their most diehard fans. Following the success of their quadruple platinum selling self-titled debut Six60, which went on to pick up 6 New Zealand Music Awards.
Six60 are a band with songs that make just as much sense when listened to with headphones strapped on, as they do in the heat of a capacity concert moment. And as a live act, they’re mindblowing.
Careening between roots, soul, pop, dubstep, R&B and drum & bass, the band’s unorthodox marrying and mish-mashery between unlikely genres is something fans have come to know and love about their music. It culminates in their explosive live shows, making them one of the most exciting bands to experience live.
Six60’s popularity exploded from Dunedin outwards into the rest of the country soon after they emerged thanks to an enigmatic live show, infectious radio singles and a progressive onslaught of guerrilla promotion via social media. 2015 saw the release of their second album with the first single release, Special, creating an addictive summery vibe. The track landed gleefully in the sweet spot between soul and R&B, while channeling hints of Pharrell Williams-esque melodies and jinky guitar sounds the band are well-known for. Don’t miss these guys in 2017!
