Thriller is a beautiful bench mark when trying to create our own music. From the drum parts, to the synth sounds to the overall mix and of course Michael’s energetic flawless vocals. This album influences every aspect of our musicianship” – Elliot Smith (The Villains).

Crowned the ‘King of Pop’ Michael Jackson was, without a doubt, the most influential artist of the 20th Century. More than just a pop star though; Jackson’s sheer force of charisma, electrifying stage presence, signature dance moves and powerful legacy captured something entirely different – something new – something tastefully adventurous. His music; a jazzy pop-rock, Motown-funk fusion swirled together perfectly to create masterpiece after masterpiece, and left a world of fans completely breathless.

In between busting out the most epic dance moves; from the blunt sexuality of his crotch grabs to the brilliant creation of his famous moonwalk, Jackson’s 1982 Thriller changed the face of music (and music videos) forever. Fuelled by liquid smoothness, groundbreaking songs and mesmerising choreography, Thriller became the blueprint of the modern pop/R&B record. And just last year, the album officially became the first LP to be recognised for selling 30 million copies in the US alone, with more than 100 million copies sold worldwide too, according to The Recording Industry Association of America.

The Michael Jackson ‘Thriller‘ Influence

Earning eight Grammy awards after receiving 12 nominations, Michael Jackson’s Thriller is the world’s biggest selling album of its time. And for good reason too. Jackson had no problem releasing ridiculously good music, but Thriller effectively combined everything we know and love about him into the one record – infectious melodies, those trademark dance moves, monstrosity music clips, uptempo funk and gracefully aggressive vocals. With songs like Billie Jean, The Girl Is Mine, Beat It, Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ and Thriller, how could you go wrong!?

Thrilling the world with this particular album, Jackson showed the diversity of his talent by branching off into various genres; including R&B, funk, rock and straight up 80s synth-pop at its finest. Revealing influences from artists like Stevie Wonder and James Brown, Jackson’s Thriller flaunted groove, jumpy bass-lines, climatic catchy harmonies and funkadelic pop sensibility. Armed with his red leather zipper jacket or the famous crisp white suite and the single, sequined glove; Jackson didn’t just create brilliant songs – he created a fearless piece of art and an eternal legacy in pop music.

“They are just incredible songs“, explains Smith. “The instrumentation and performances are perfect. This album is a beautiful bench mark when we’re trying to create our own music. From the drum parts, to the synth sounds to the overall mix and of course Michael’s energetic and flawless vocals. This album influences every aspect of our musicianship”.
