Top Live Music Venues in Perth City You Need to Visit Today

Recently I contributed to Visit Perth City and So Perth (Tweet Perth) for a piece on the top locations for live music in Perth. It’s no secret that the local industry has been on a bit of a downfall in the recent years, with iconic live music venues like The Bakery and Devilles shutting their doors last year. But 2016 has shot off to a great start and proves to stay promising with a host of new live music venues being introduced to the mix (not to mention, how perfectly they’ve all taken off too). Believe it or not, Perth city is home to some absolute gems of live music venues!

Or fast forward to a sneak-peak of my personal favourites below:

The Ellington Jazz Club

An elegant, New York inspired venue, The Ellington Jazz Club is home to some of the sexiest soul, roots, blues and jazz music. Renowned for its world-class caliber of bands and musicians, you can trust there’s never going to be any disappointment in what you’re going to hear. The venue itself is funky and stylish, with a contemporary selection of cocktails, spirits and wines to tempt your tastebuds and complement the music beautifully.

Nestled in an intimate setting that has a constant buzz to it, The Ellington has table seating (with service) at the front of the stage to get the full impact of the bands or a standing section that wraps around the bar and back area. It’s not a venue where you can get down and boogie (although the live music will make you want to groove) but it oozes a chic-charm that I’m still yet to discover anywhere else in Perth.

Complete with everything from the finest Australian jazz musicians to the friendly, accommodating staff and fantastic acoustics, The Ellington Jazz Club is the most up close and personal you’ll get with live music.

Open: Predominately Wednesday to Sunday with a 7pm early session and late night act starting at 11.30 on weekends. Open Monday and Tuesday nights for special shows, so it pays to check the timetable on their website for exact opening times.
Location: Beaufort Street, Northbridge.

The Laneway Lounge

A sophisticated ultra-cool lounge and jazz club, The Laneway Lounge is a vintage live music venue with a contemporary edge. Complete with a dining room and secluded booths, top shelf bar and lounge space which acts as an almost-private live music room, Laneway is an unexpected surprise tucked just off Murray Street.

Showcasing local and international jazz numbers to sweeten up your evenings, The Laneway Lounge boasts a great selection of classic jazz era-inspired cocktails to complement the tunes. Hosting an open mic night every Tuesday, Laneway has live music from the soul, class jazz and reggae eras Wednesday nights through to Saturdays.

Open: Tuesday – Thursday 4pm-12am, Friday 4pm-1am, Saturday 5pm-1am.
Location: Murray Street, Perth.

I have just had a quick look at your page and without looking too deep, couldn’t find a reference or indeed a mention of the Charles Hotel or the Perth Blues Club recognised throughout Australia ,and in many parts of the USA.Look for Eugene Hideaway Bridges comments.
The fact that the Blues Club has been running continuously for twenty five years speaks for itself.Check out our next international act on Feb7.
I am in NZ for another week but I may even invite you to feb 7 if that’s what it takes.
Big Shows coming to Charles on Fridays and Saturdays as well.
    Cheers rick.

    Hi Rick.

Thanks for getting in contact and your suggestions 🙂 for this particular piece, there was no mention of the Charles Hotel as the article specifically featured venues in the Perth CBD as part of a piece with So Perth. I’ve mentioned both the venue and the Perth Blues Club in previous gig guides though, and happy to give them future plugs too. Feel free to email me at if you have any gigs you would like me to include. Would love to come and review a show too, but I’ll be in Thailand for that date so anything from March would suit better.
