Verge Collection Named 2017 Recipients of New National Touring Grant

Perth indi rock outfit Verge Collection have taken out the Tapped By Otherside touring grant. In a toast to support Australian musicians, Fremantle’s Otherside Brewing Co. announced two major music industry grants earlier this year. The Australian Touring Grant ($5,000) was recently awarded to Verge Collection, whilst Fremantle group Koi Child took out the International Development Grant ($2,500) back in March.

Verge Collection, who formed in 2015 from Perth’s fertile musical scape, have wasted no time building a name for themselves. The band attracted local and national attention with their sublime pop vignettes that capture a distinctly WA mood, which is reminiscent of The Triffids and The Panics. After emerging from some fierce competition to get their hands on the prize, Verge Collection’s grant winnings will assist them on their headline national tour in August.

Following up from the success of their single Our Place and Class of 09′ EP, the band have scheduled their debut album for later this year. The record is to be preceded by the release of their new single For the Story in July. The Tapped By Otherside grant will offer vital support for Verge Collection to mount their first significant national tour. See dates below.

“Touring nationally when you’re based in Perth is always costly and many bands aren’t lucky enough to do it. This grant will help us so much by underwriting a massive expense and help us get our music to an east coast audience. A lot of businesses talk about supporting live, original music in WA; it’s great to see one putting its money where its mouth is!” – Ben Arnold (Verge Collection frontman and songwriter)

The impressive shortlist for the Australian Touring Grant included POW! Negro, Jacob Diamond, Hideous Sun Demon, Lucy Peach and Peter Bibbly. A panel of industry experts including The Music’s Daniel Cribb determined this year’s recipient. Otherside Brewing Co’s Julian Tompkin said the response to the inaugural grant was encouraging.

We couldn’t be more encouraged by the response to Tapped By OthersideFor us, it’s always been about genuinely supporting local creative talent in a meaningful way. We look forward to announcing the next round of grants in the near future”.

A huge congratulations to Verge Collection. They’ve got the charm, the chops and the conviction, and we’re proud to be supporting them.”

Tapped By Otherside was open exclusively to WA artists in its inaugural year. However, from 2018, as the size of the fund increases, the yearly program plans to open applications Australia-wide. This change is in hope to potentially expand into other creative platforms.
